The lines are how the smoke gets out.

Lift the top, set a lit coal inside, lay the oud over it, close it again. The smoke has nowhere else to go, so it leaves through the grooves.

The base turns warm while the coal works. Warm enough to rest a hand on, not hot.

Closed, it's simply a stone cube. Most people leave it out on a shelf or a console. It doesn't need to be burning to earn its place.
